Can three members of the Shafia family, accused of killing four other family members, survive in jail, awaiting trial? One of the three, 18-year-old Hamed Shafia (inset), was assaulted by fellow inmates at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee (just west of Kingston, Ont.) two days after the trio arrived there, prison sources have told me. The full story is after the jump, and available here at the Kingston Whig-Standard website. Sources tell me that the three are “hated” inside the provincial facility, not surprising given the crimes of which they’re accused. Tooba Mohammed Yahya, I’m told, appears sad and quiet behind bars, although she’s facing death threats and taunts of “baby killer” from other female inmates who are screaming at her.
